QUICK REPORT:
Visit to Anuga Trade Fair, Cologne, Germany
10 - 14 October 2009
I am currently in Germany updating the packaging scene with what’s new in the food industry. There is a massive food trade fair in Cologne, Germany called Anuga and this is where the food industry meets every 2 years to take vision into the future, deal with the current requirements while still teasing the market place into new thoughts, concepts and direction. The show has been exceptional in that there are many innovations and ideas we can learn from.
With the world Cup Football in 2010 we are bringing back some really exciting new ideas that pick up on the theme of football and many of our existing clients will be benefiting from the new developments in their respective areas as well, unrelated to the football.
Advances in new materials allow bottles to be made of bio degradable plastics which will keep the observers of the eco initiative confident that the industry is not all just about making money with the bare necessities of packaging being used.
Lots of money is going into development of new plans to reduce carbon footprint, excess waste and toxic gas emissions. We are riding the wave in this regard and hopefully will introduce to our customers.
Proudly this year there was a South African pavilion hosting many South African food businesses. Talking to the hosts at each of these booths It was a proud moment when I realised we were out there trading in the mainstream.
Just the technology in getting out tickets using the internet and then scanning access gates to gain entry were all technologies we should be embracing in the immediate future.
The other impressive display was the ‘organic” section. Previously it represented a 10th of one hall and now, 2 years later it has its own hall!
